Last week was busy and full of many fun activities. Everyday concludes with a Lego Challenge. Students are given a challenge and a timeline to create an object (butterfly, rocket, house, etc.). They are expected to get themselves into groups and work together to meet the challenge. We talk about the importance of listening to other people's ideas. It is amazing how well they are able to work together when given the opportunity.
We also started writing Daily Journal entries. I give students the choice of "asking or telling" me something. They are enjoying the freedom of writing what they choose and having personalized responses from me.
The week concluded with pumpkin carving. Thank you to all of the parents who came to participate as well as to those who sent pumpkins for carving! It was a lot of fun. The students will participate in a draw on Monday to be able to win and take one of the carved pumpkins home.
This week we will try to keep things as "normal" as possible after Monday's Hallowe'en festivities. Monday morning will continue as usual until lunch. After 2nd period in the afternoon they will be able to dress up in their costumes. We will have the grade one classrooms designated as boy and girl change rooms. Parents are welcome to come at 1:30ish to help with the costumes. Don't worry if you are unable to come because there will be lots of adults to help your child. PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL DRESSED IN COSTUME.
During the afternoon, beginning at 2:00ish, there will be a costume parade in the gym that will take about 30 - 40 min. After that is finished, we will return to the classroom to enjoy a Hallowe'en video and some yummy snacks. Please don't worry if you were not contacted by the room rep to provide a snack. We will have about 4 parties this year and each parent will have an opportunity to provide snacks for one of them, thanks in advance.
Dates to Remember:
- Oct 31 - Halloween Parade - 2:00ish pm in the gym (parents welcome)
- Nov 1 - All Saint's Day
- Nov 4 - weekly spelling test (you, and, here, blue, come)
