Weekly Update - January 16 - 20

We had a very busy first week back. Students came in happy, re-energized and ready to learn. We also changed up the table seating plan which seemed to thrill everyone!

We continued writing daily in the journals this week and we also began squiggle stories. Your children created a picture from a squiggle line and then wrote a story about it. The stories are quite simple at this time, but students are beginning to spell words and form sentences using some of the strategies they have learned.

Many of the students have been working on the math addition/subtraction skills booklets and have asked to take them home. Most students have already finished the first two booklets. I am impressed by their progress! Please remind them to bring the booklet back to school each day.

We began daily morning work sheets. Each sheet focuses on a number of skills from telling time and counting money to a number of different literacy activities. We have worked on them together this week but they will be flying solo from here on.

I am glad to see that many of the students have been reading books regularly on Raz Kids. At this time of the year, students should be heading near level D/E books. I adjusted all of the reading levels on Raz-Kids so please let me know if your child is finding the books too easy or too difficult. They have been increasing their reading stamina since the beginning of the year and we are now at about 20 minutes!

Art club for grade one students begins this Tuesday and will continue each Tuesday at lunch time for the rest of January. Students just needed to show up to join, we can have about 30 students take part. If your child is interested in joining art club, they just need to let me know.

Dates to remember:

Jan 16 - Pizza lunch sponsored by 6S

Jan 17 - Safety City Bullying presentation for 1B/1K
