Weekly Update - October 19 - 23

Last week was a very short week so it went by in a blink! We are gearing up for Hallowe’en so it should be a very busy couple of weeks.
In addition to working on various Hallowe’en activities, we will be inviting parents to carve pumpkins with us on Tuesday October 27th. We should have 7 pumpkins so we will break students up into small groups of one parent and three students per pumpkin. The teacher and other volunteers will circulate to help with carving, design ideas and separating the seeds for me to bake on the weekend. We will begin about 10:35 am and should be finished in time to send students back to class for lunch. Just a reminder to parent helpers to please bring a bowl and knife each for carving and seed collection.
We have a buddy grade one class at FLVT again this year. We will begin writing short Hallowe'en notes and making them into a book that we will send on Friday. We will also be sending them treats (spiders made from oreo cookies, pretzels and M&Ms). We will make our buddies 4 to 5 books this year as we become better writers.
Our room rep will be contacting a few of you to ask you to send healthy treats for our very short party after the costume parade on October 30th. We will probably only have about 30 min. to eat and watch a short video. Students will have just finished lunch so they may not be overly hungry, a few small treats will likely be sufficient. Thank you in advance!
We are very excited to continue the Walking Toward Literacy series. We have contacted a number of "local Celebrities" and have asked them to come and read their favourite childhood book to participating grade 1 - 3 classes. Afterwards, students will be encouraged to ask questions. Our next session is this Friday October 23rd and we are pleased to welcome Dave Miluliak.
Thank you for all of the practicing of spelling words you have been doing at home. It has been making a positive difference in both student confidence and performance!
* Scholastic orders will be sent in Monday October 19th
